Thousands attend Duterte’s party in south Philippines
Tens of thousands of people flocked to a park in the southern Philippines for a public party Saturday to celebrate the election victory of Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte ahead of his inauguration as president.
Around 2,000 security personnel were stationed at the city’s Crocodile Park where they frisked and inspected those arriving for the festivities, who were banned from bringing backpacks, hats, cigarettes, lighters and sunglasses.
Local media cited the organizers of the celebration, scheduled to last from 1 p.m. (0500GMT) Saturday to 1 a.m. Sunday, as saying that more than 200,000 people were expected to attend.
Duterte, who served 22 years as Davao City’s outspoken mayor, won the election last month by a landslide and is set to become the first Philippine president from the troubled southern island of Mindanao upon his inauguration June 30.
Jimmy Legaspi, a 34-year-old tending to his roadside stall Saturday, told news broadcaster ABS-CBN that residents are “very proud that our next president is from Mindanao”.
“We want peace, not just in Mindanao but in the entire country,” he stressed.
Under Duterte, Davao City transformed from a crime ridden hovel to a peaceful and investment-friendly city, where he imposed bans on public smoking, and the selling of alcohol and the operation of entertainment spots past midnight.
In 2015, however, Amnesty International alleged that “death squads” under his control were responsible for 700 extrajudicial executions in the region. Duterte is reported to have responded that it was more like 1,700.
Duterte, a devout Christian, has backed the outgoing government's peace process with one-time largest Muslim rebel group the Moro Islamic Liberation Front as well as indigenous peoples’ calls for greater autonomy. He has also made overtures toward negotiating with a decades-old communist insurgency.
After winning the May 9 polls on a crime-fighting campaign, Duterte vowed to work toward re-imposing the death penalty and offered a bounty to officers who capture drug dealers “dead or alive”.
Legaspi's wife, 33-year-old Inday, said Saturday that the couple -- both high school dropouts -- had heard reports of “criminals” being killed, “but we're not afraid because we are not doing anything wrong.”
The husband and wife told ABS-CBN that they would join the thanksgiving festivities with their seven-year-old son, for whom they had hopes of a college education.
The Philippine Inquirer reported that vendors had traveled to Davao the night before the party and camped out near the park.
Bebeng Inio, who traveled from Tagum City alongside her husband and neighbors, told the newspaper that they intended to sell food such as fish crackers.
“We hope all of the problems in our place, in the national will be solved. Everything,” she said.

Happy' KC won't talk about Aly Borromeo
MANILA, Philippines -- Kapamilya actress KC Concepcion doesn't hide the fact that she's happy with her current love life but remains tight-lipped when asked about the real score between her and football player Aly Borromeo.
"Happy ako sa love life ko ngayon. Pero I don't want to say much. Again, it's not a secret but it's private. I'd rather keep it that way," Concepcion said during the press launch of Swiss Miss Dark Chocolate on Friday.
Concepcion, however, obliged reporters who quizzed her on the photo she shared on Instagram earlier this week showing their intertwined hands.
"First time ko to do something like that. It's really freeing. Parang freedom siya," she said of the photo, which thrilled her fans.
"Siyempre mahal ko naman 'yung mga fans. I want to give them something also that would make them happy. Siguro more than that, I will just keep quiet na lang kasi he's not naman in showbiz and it's part of my life that's actually private. Not secret; private," she stressed.
The eldest daughter of veteran star Sharon Cuneta shared that she appreciates the fact that Borromeo supports everything she does. "He really makes me a better person," she said.
In a previous interview, Cuneta said she approves of Borromeo, even adding that she wants Concepcion to get married soon.
Asked if Borromeo is already her boyfriend, Concepcion said: "Ayaw ko na lang sagutin. Kung ano 'yung iisipin ninyo, 'yun na lang."

Pia Wurtzbach denies conducting election-related poll
MANILA, Philippines - On Wednesday, Pia Wurtzbach warned her fans about some fake accounts claiming to be her.
This comes after a certain account on Facebook, bearing her name and photo, conducted an election poll which immediately went viral on the internet.
"Please stop. This is not real. This is not me. Thank you :)," the caption reads.
In addition to denying the page, she also mentioned that she only has two legitimate accounts on Facebook, a fan page group and the official Miss Universe account.
In a press conference held in lieu with her homecoming parade last January, the 26-year-old beauty queen encouraged voters to be very careful on who they are voting for.
"I hope that we elect the right people because it’s going to shape the country for the next couple of years so it’s very important," Wurtzbach said in front of several press members.
"Kilalanin n’yo po nang mabuti ‘yung mga iboboto n’yo. Hindi po sapilitan o parang minadaling desisyon. Kailangan po magaan sa loob n’yo kung sino ang iboboto n’yo po for the elections," the beauty queen added.
Wurtzbach, who last visited the Philippines this April to crown her successor, has not been open about endorsing any presidential candidate.

Manila Fashion Festival is now on its fourth year. Through past seasons, one-stop creative powerhouse Art Personas has strived to provide established and rising Filipino designers a platform to succeed in their premise while supporting the industry’s call for domestic cultivation and international expansion.
Check out some of Rivera's designs for Fall/Winter 2016 showcased on day 1 of the Manila Fashion Festival, held at the EDSA Shangri-La Hotel on April 11.
In reforming the traditional runway experience, Manila Fashion Festival collaborated with ZALORA Philippines, Asia’s leading online fashion destination to bring fashion to a new reach. Arum defends choosing Bradley over Crawford for Pacquiao
LAS VEGAS - Critics of Saturday's fight between Manny Pacquiao and Timothy Bradley argue that the former should've chosen a younger and more dangerous opponent whom he hadn't faced before.
Some observers prefer Pacquiao to take on rising star Terence Crawford, currently the WBO super lightweight champion.
Pacquiao and Freddie Roach were receptive of the fight, but ultimately, the final decision wasn't up to them.
"We said yes (to fighting Crawford), but I don't think it was us who didn't want to make it happen," Roach told a few reporters after Pacquiao made his grand arrival at the MGM Grand here Tuesday (Wednesday in Manila).
Top Rank Inc. chief Bob Arum immediately butted in, saying he was the one responsible for picking Bradley over Crawford as Pacquiao's next foe.
"That's true," said Arum.
The reason, according to the veteran promoter, is marketability, as Crawford's fan base outside his hometown of Omaha, Nebraska, is not huge enough.
Boxing is business after all, and promoters want to maximize profits in huge events.
Pacquiao and Bradley have clashed twice already, producing decent pay-per-view numbers. Crawford (28-0, 20 KOs), meanwhile, remains a question mark.
"I've told everybody the same freaking thing over and over again: Crawford is an excellent, excellent fighter. A future star for Top Rank and for boxing. But Crawford wasn't known to the people," Arum added.
"He had been in a couple of fights on HBO and we were afraid to put him as a major opponent for Manny Pacquiao."

It’s a boy for James & Michela
The first time Michela Cazzola underwent an ultrasound, the gender of the baby couldn’t be determined,“kasi nakatalikod siya” according to Michela’s boyfriend James Yap.
That was two weeks ago. Recently, Michela again had an ultrasound and, yes, she and James will have a baby boy to be delivered sometime end of July or middle of August.
“We have several names in mind for the baby but we haven’t chosen which one yet,” Michela, who is into her sixth month of pregnancy, told Funfare.
It will be James’ third child; the first is from a previous relationship and second is Bimby, with ex-wife Kris Aquino who is with Bimby and other son Joshua on a three-month doctor-advised vacation in Hawaii to stabilize her erratic blood pressure.
James, 34 (last Feb. 15), and Michela (turning 33 on Oct. 27) have been going steady since 2012. Michela told Funfare in an earlier interview that they do have plans of getting married, perhaps when their son is old enough to serve as ring bearer.
Meanwhile, James is recuperating from a right-calf injury he sustained during the third quarter of last Sunday’s game in which his team, Star Hotshots, lost to the San Miguel Beermen (117-98). The two-time MVP (Most Valuable Player) cried “Ouch!” when he was injected with PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) at the St. Luke’s Medical Center (Global).

Gloc-9 Insists He’s Just Making a Living with Controversial Binay Gigs
Aristotle Pollisco, better known as rapper Gloc-9, has posted a statement on his Facebook page to explain his much derided performances at the campaign rallies of Vice President and presidential aspirant Jejomar Binay and his daughter, Makati representative and mayoralty hopeful Abby Binay.
Echoing an earlier statement issued by his management, PPL Entertainment, to several media outlets, the embattled rapper said that he had been performing not just for the Binays but for a number of local candidates regardless of party affiliation.
According to his management, Pollisco has “performed in sorties for local candidates regardless of party affiliations in Laguna, Bocaue, and Cavite.”
“That it is this Makati gig that has gotten mileage is no surprise, and that has more to do with the media than with Gloc-9. To Gloc-9 management this was just a regular sortie gig for a local candidate, no different from the sorties before it, and the sorties that will come after it,” went the rest of PPL Entertainment’s statement.
While most of Pollisco’s election-related gigs are for local candidates, his reported Easter Sunday performance at the vice president’s sortie in Noveleta, Cavite might have been the first time he performed for a presidential candidate.
In February, the Binay campaign acquired the rights to his latest song, “Pareho Tayo”. The lyrics of the independently released single echo Binay’s claim of affinity with the poor despite being accused of amassing billions of pesos in anomalous transactions during his long reign as Makati mayor.
But while Pollisco continues to get flak for his controversial gigs, at least one fellow artist understands where he was coming from. No stranger to controversy himself, Chito Miranda of Parokya ni Edgar took to Twitter to commiserate with Gloc-9.
In 2014, Parokya ni Edgar was criticized for performing at the Marcos Fiesta, a celebration of the 97th birthday of the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos held at the Ilocos Norte Centennial Arena in Laoag City. In recent comments on social media, Miranda expressed his support for the presidential bid of Davao City mayor Rodrigo Duterte.
Before the Binay camp bought “Pareho Tayo” as a campaign song, Pollisco was believed to be a Duterte supporter himself.
A native of Binangonan, Rizal, Gloc-9 began his career with the gangsta rap group Death Threat in 1993. His rise to prominence as a solo act is a result of hit singles that tackle social issues including poverty, unemployment and patriotism. His nationalistic image has led to his being commissioned to write and perform “Hindi Pa Tapos,” the theme song of the historical film, “Bonifacio: Ang Unang Pangulo”, and “Dapat Tama”, the theme song of the GMA Network’s coverage of the 2013 midterm elections.
One of his biggest hits, “Upuan,” is about a firmly entrenched leader who is insensitive to the plight of his suffering people.

ABS-CBN Philharmonic to Perform with Bocelli
MANILA, Philippines – The ABS-CBN Philharmonic Orchestra is set to perform with the world-famous Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli in his April 26 concert at the Mall of Asia (MOA) Arena.
“It started out as an inquiry (from Bocelli’s group). So, we sent videos of our classical performances upon their request. Magaling naman talaga ang orchestra so I’m not surprised that they really chose us,” said Maestro Gerard Salonga, the conductor of the ABS-CBN Philharmonic Orchestra.
The concert forms part of Bocelli’s ongoing Cinema world tour to promote his 15th album with the same title. It will also be the classical music icon’s second time in the Philippines after more than a decade.
“A lot of the musicians (in ABS-CBN Philharmonic) were in the orchestra that played in his last concert in the country. Of course, the guy is really talented, an amazing singer and musician. It doesn’t matter how many times you see him, he always amazes me.”
The upcoming performance is just one of the highlights in the orchestra’s calendar of events this year.
Recently, the ABS-CBN Philharmonic held a small-scale, but intensive pilot workshop on conducting. Young musicians Francis Concio, Toma Cayabyab and Ejay Yatco were invited to train with Gerard and the 42-piece orchestra.
“We were looking for an assistant conductor a few months ago but that didn’t work out. So, I thought, okay, if we can’t find one, let’s see who we can teach. That’s how (the idea to hold the workshop) started,” Gerard said.
The essential requirements of a potential conductor include understanding of the basic conducting technique, mastery of an instrument, and a historical and theoretical background on music. “Then, there’s that extra thing,” Gerard mused, referring to that special charm to command a group of accomplished musicians to do things “even if against their will.”
The workshop participants learned this and more during the three-day training that culminated in a recital at the ABS-CBN Dolphy Theater.
Francis, a musical scorer/arranger, conducted John Williams’ The Mission NBC as his recital piece. His family, led by his mom, ABS-CBN executive adviser to the chairman, chief content officer and ABS-CBN University president Charo Santos-Concio, came to show their full support.
Toma, on the other hand, is a choral conducting major at the University of the Philippines. He conducted the Visayan love song Usahay and the Kapampangan folk song Atin Cu Pung Singsing, both of which were rearranged by his father, OPM luminary and maestro Ryan Cayabyab.
Theater musical director and composer Ejay performed his own work titled Friction during the recital. Ejay has the conducting genes as well because his grandfather is the brother of the late orchestra conductor and violinist Maestro Oscar Yatco.
“We went with the people we know for their musical capabilities, what they need from conducting and what they’re going to use it for,” said Gerard.
Meanwhile, the ABS-CBN Philharmonic Orchestra will be turning four years old this year. For more TFC Filipino Channel News – Please visit this link to subscribe: PINOY ONLINE TV
